When all under Heaven know beauty as beauty,
there is then ugliness
When all know good as good,
there is then not-good
Therefore being and non-being give birth to each other
Difficult and easy complete each other
Long and short contrast each other
High and low rest upon each other
Voice and sound harmonize each other
Front and back follow each other
Therefore the sage handles affairs without action
Carries out teaching without words
All things arise and he does not turn away from them
He gives them life and does not possess them
Acts but does not rely on his own ability
Achieves success but does not dwell on it
It is precisely because he does not dwell on success
That it never goes away
